Mama Licha Clinic, Estelí

Erin and Mama LichaMama Licha (Alicia Huete) is a well-known midwife. Her photo graces the back cover of the book published by Hesperian Foundation, “Where There is No Midwife.” Though retired after 30 years with the Ministry of Health, when pregnant women arrived at her home, she began tending them.

Listen to how Mama Licha’s clinic was discovered and built.

When two Yale midwifery students witnessed the important service Mama Licha provided with no resources other than her own hands and bed, they decided to help. Angela Rogers and Bethany Golden raised funds to build a two-room clinic in Mama Licha’s back yard. She gives prenatal care, sex education talks, attends deliveries, does pap smears, and a variety of other health tasks.

ProNica volunteers have served Mama Licha, assisting with their medical and organizational skills. Mama Licha with baby

In 2010 ProNica awarded Mama Licha Clinic $4205 for medical procedures and supplies. Your donation supports Mama Licha and her many clients.
